New York RN accused of identity theft: 3 things to know

New York officials recently announced the arrest of a local nurse. The prosecution is currently accusing her of various crimes in connection to identity theft. The prosecution states the woman stole another’s identity and began making withdrawals from the alleged victim’s banking account. The state claims to have evidence the registered nurse (RN) used the other woman’s debit card to access the account. As a result, the prosecution has charged the RN with 1st-degree identity theft, nine charges for 4th-degree grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

What can other nurses in NY learn from this case?

Nurses throughout the state can learn three lessons from this case:

  • The police are investigation allegations of wrongdoing. The current pandemic has had an impact on our daily lives, but enforcement officers continue to investigate allegations of wrongdoing and will move forward with criminal charges if evidence is found to support criminal charges.
  • Criminal charges are serious. The case above may be a misunderstanding or a moment of weakness. Whatever led to the allegations, it is important to know that they come with serious consequences. Steep financial penalties and potential imprisonment could result from a conviction in these types of cases.
  • Allegations of wrongdoing can impact your profession. These allegations can lead to an investigation by the state licensing board, potentially impacting your ability to continue in your chosen profession.

Those who face such allegations and receive notification of an investigation by the state licensing board are wise to act to protect their nursing license.
