New York law changes nursing requirements

New York recently passed a law that changes the requirements needed to earn a nursing license. The law achieves two goals: creates a commission to review the nursing profession and increases the requirements tied to the license.

Creation of a commission

The law creates a temporary nursing program evaluation commission. The group will review what types of barriers are present that keep candidates from entering the nursing profession. The group will report to the governor after 12 months of research.

Increased requirements for the nursing license

The law also requires that all registered professional nurses (RPNs) receive continued education to receive a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree within ten years of licensure.

There are exemptions to this requirement. Current nurses practicing in NY are exempt as well as those currently enrolled in nursing programs within the state and those who have received acceptance into such programs. However, it is important to note that there are benefits to the pursuit of the degree. The presence of a degree will likely impact future opportunities and salary.

Takeaway lesson for current NY nurses

The nursing profession is more than just a job. Those who pursue this line of work often dedicate themselves to their craft. These professionals help patients in need on their road to recovery. It takes dedication, skill and hard work to earn a nursing license. Whether taking the extra time and effort to get the BSN or not, those who feel their license is in jeopardy should take the matter seriously. If you believe you are the subject of an investigation, contact an attorney. Legal counsel can review the situation and build a defense to protect your interests.
