Texas nurses excel on nursing exams … but what’s next?

Texas nursing students are excelling when it comes time to take their exams and get their nursing license. The Texas Board of Nursing recently reported results on the National Council Licensure Examination taken in 2018. Two universities in the eastern portion of the state reported 100% passing rates while most others in the area were above 90%.

Although students are doing well on their tests, the shift into the profession has a steep learning curve. New nurses can better ensure a smooth transition with the following tips:

  • Get a mentor. It is important to have a more experienced nurse you can ask questions or simply observe. Many facilities have a preestablished program and will pair you up with a mentor. If not, be proactive and find one. The benefits will likely outweigh the effort it takes to begin the relationship.
  • Know your limits. It is easy to get intimidated by the hustle and bustle of the job, but it is important to know your limits. Do not push yourself to go too fast, too soon. Take the time to do the job right.
  • Stay healthy. Do not forget to take care of yourself. Take time to eat and pack healthy snacks to ensure you have energy throughout your shift.
  • Keep curious. Curiosity likely fueled your journey through nursing school. Stay curious. Continue to learn. This will help you to excel within your profession and likely result in better care for your patients.

It is also important to take pride in the work you have done to get this far. Once you have your license, do not let others threaten its integrity. Take action to protect your interests if you face allegations of wrongdoing or an investigation by the nursing board.
